When you think of the Greek Islands, what names spring to mind? Crete? Santorini? Mykonos? While these islands are perfect for indulging in the more commercial tourist activities, if it is a beach holiday you’re after, the lesser-known islands could prove just as attractive.
Whichever Greek island you find yourself on, you can be sure to find an endless supply of sumptuous sandy stretches. Whether you go there for a honeymoon and rent a car in Santorini, or traveling to Heraklion with kids, there are plenty of islands in Greece that could be your ideal destination for your getaway.
However, in this post we’ve hand-picked three beaches from some of the less commercialized Greek Islands that should be added to your travel bucket list.
Sarakiniko Beach, Milos
Found on the island of Milos, Sarakiniko Beach is one of the quirkier beaches in the Greek Islands, and has featured on many travel guides. Famed for its otherworldly geology, Sarakiniko’s brilliant white rocks form the framework of this extraordinary beach, which is the jewel in the crown of Milos’ volcanic landscape.
Besides the memorable lunar-esque aesthetics, there are plenty more reasons to visit Sarakiniko. Why not take a kayak out and explore the fascinating Milos coastline by sea, or test your nerve at one of the designated cliff jumping spots? There is also a small sandy stretch to lay out your beach towel for the day.
Unlike with some of the other more isolated islands, Milos is relatively easy to get to, with flights and ferries connecting it to Athens on the mainland.
Koukounaries Beach, Skiathos
Skiathos boasts an enviable collection of more than 60 beaches, with a sandy stretch to suit every type of traveler. In the north, you will typically find the more secluded beaches favored by naturists, whereas the more commercialized beaches with sunbeds and surfboards can be found in the south.
One of the most popular in Skiathos’ southern catalog is Koukounaries Beach. Due to its vicinity to a range of bars and restaurants, Koukounaries can become quite busy, particularly in the summer months. However, the organized layout of the beach means you shouldn’t have trouble finding a sunbathing spot.
The waters here are very calm, making it suitable for children to go for a swim. If you’re looking to make waves, however, there are plenty of water sports on offer at Koukounaries, so you can be sure to find something for everyone.
Marble Beach, Thassos
Thassos is the northernmost Greek isle in the Aegean Sea, and boasts some of the most unique beaches found in this part of the world. Better known for its natural greenery and luscious landscapes, Thassos is far less commercialized than its more established neighbors.
Spending your time trekking along the island’s stunning hiking paths before relaxing on the beach is the order of the day on this quaint Aegean jewel. Being in close proximity to the mainland, the island is easily accessible, with a direct ferry connecting it to the city of Kavala in northern Greece.
Once there, you will discover a plethora of unspoiled beaches, including one of the island’s crowning glories – Marble Beach. Nestled on the northeastern coast, Marble Beach A.K.A. Saliara is best known for the white pebbles which encase the seabed, and almost appear to sparkle beneath the Aegean sun. This gives the sea here a striking emerald color, luring visitors in to take a dip after soaking up the sun on the perfect golden sands.
