There’s hardly anything more fun than solo traveling. You get to leave your comfort zone and try different things, discover new places, and more. Here are some essential solo travel tips to consider.
But on a solo trip, you’re responsible for yourself and do not have anyone to rely on. This means that there are a lot of things to take care of; keep their belongings secure, carry out thorough research for destination locations, share itineraries with trusted friends, and have a backup plan in case anything goes wrong. The list is endless.
However, it does not matter how rigorously you plan for a solo trip, you may encounter uninvited problems. From my past experiences as a solo traveler, I’ve jotted down some “don’ts” that should help you a lot. And I believe these solo travel tips will help you stay safe as on your trip!
4 Solo Trip Essentials You Should Never Do
Don’t Travel Without an Internet Connectivity
I believe traveling without reliable internet is like inviting problems, undue stress, and overthinking on a trip that should otherwise be a source of pure joy and happiness. A reliable data plan should help you stay connected to your loved ones or ask for help, if needed.
Well, not just for help, you may need a swift internet connection for the following as well:
- Making online payments at retail stores
- Uploading pictures of your trip on social media platforms.
- Using navigation apps.
- Needing internet connectivity for work.
Thanks to Xfinity, as an internet user, I had access to several public WiFi hotspot zones around the country. As an added benefit, Xfinity customer service is even accessible in remote locations to swiftly resolve any data-related queries.
Don’t Travel Without a Power Backup
A power backup, whether it is for charging your electronics or lighting up your campsite, is a must-have gadget for solo travelers. Even if you’re staying at a hotel, you may experience frequent power outages and that is when a portable power station would come in handy.
Besides a portable power station, a power bank should always be in your backpack. Sometimes, on a steep hike, you may not be able to carry a portable power station. That is when a heavy-duty power bank would be your backup to charge your electronics such as a camera, drone, rechargeable light, smartphone, and more.
Don’t Travel Without an Insurance
As I mentioned above, you may encounter uninvited problems on a solo trip and your best shot to be on the safe side is to insure your trip. And not just the solo trip, every trip should be insured for the following reasons:
- Travel insurance may cover your medical expenses, for instance, medication or hospitalization costs.
- In case your hotel booking is canceled or flights get delayed, some travel insurance companies may compensate you for your troubles.
- Travel insurance may cover the cost of luggage loss, damage, or theft. They may even cover your expenses in case you lose important documents like your passport.
- Travel insurance may lend you a specified amount in case of any financial emergency on the trip.
I believe it’s a bargain as travel insurance may not be extravagantly expensive. And with all the benefits included in travel insurance, it’s best to have one, especially on a solo trip.
Don’t Get Too Friendly with Strangers
While chatting with strangers is a great way to learn about the culture and traditions of a place, you should still never let your guard down, especially as a solo traveler.
Most people you find on a trip may have good intentions, but how do you know that? Scammers may try to be extra nice to win your trust. And when they feel that they’ve gained your trust, they may steal from you without you knowing.
So, if a stranger seems too friendly or asks you to lend them some money, don’t do it, as they may be trying to scam you.
Bonus Section: Must-Have Items for Solo Travelers
Before I wind up, below are some must-have items for every solo traveler:
