Hola, mi amor!
So, after covering Seville just a couple of weeks ago, we're going back to Spain to see how we can stretch $10 USD to travel in another city in the country. And this time, we're off to the capital city of Spain: Madrid.
If I have to be honest, I personally don't know much about the city except for being a football fan that forced me to familiarize myself with Real Madrid FC.
I think it's only through football that gets me understood about other stuff, from the heat between Real and Barcelona that has something to do with the political situation. Yada yada yada.
Now, thanks to Martin of Madrid Discovery, we'll get closer to the capital city and see how far we could get there with your $10 USD!
5 Things to Do Under $10 USD in Madrid
Before introducing you to the different things to do with 10 USD it is important to tell you how much it represents in local currency.
As per June 2020: 1 USD = 0,89 € and therefore 10 USD = 8,91 €.
Spain is one of the most economical European countries to travel, you will find relatively low prices even in the capital. This will allow you to make the most of your stay without having to spend a fortune.
It is possible to visit many museums free of charge, which saves a maximum of money.
In order to get an idea of the budget, you will have to plan for a future stay in the capital city. Here is what you can do with $10 USD in Madrid.
Did you know?
The official residency of the Spanish Royal Family, The Palacio Real, is the largest royal palace in Europe by floor area.
Churros con Chocolate
Eat the famous churros con chocolate for breakfast or a snack. You will find this pastry in many bars in the city and in restaurants like Valor or St Gines.
For the best experience, enjoy a morning at the Rastro market to taste the best churros of the city at the Chucherria calle Santa Ana, in addition to being delicious they won't cost you less than 2€.
Price: 6 churros + 1 Chocolate: 4.5€ ($5.05 USD)
Have a drink on a rooftop
Have a drink on the rooftop del Circulo de Bella art: 4€ for a ride and 4€ for a drink, which will cost you 8€ ($8.89).
You will find many rooftops in Madrid. However, if you want to get some height, take a ride at the RIU rooftop to have one of the most beautiful 360° views of the Spanish capital.
If you're keen to do the latter, you can climb to the top of the RIU rooftop before 6 PM. This will allow you to pay 5€ (around $5.64 USD) for the entrance to the rooftop instead of 10€ ($11.28 USD) after 6 PM.
Eat tapas
Eating tapas at the San Miguel market.
Located not far from the Plaza Mayor, this market will offer you a wide variety of tapas, which will cost you from 2.5€ to 4€ for a tapa.
If you love Spanish gastronomy, then we suggest you visit the San Ildefonse market and the Mercado de la Paz located in the chic barrio district of Salamanca.
If you're intrigued to enjoy tapas for less than 5€, discover the San Anton market in the Chueca district for a better experience.
Vintage clothes shopping
Buy vintage clothes in the Malasana district. You will find many clothes shops there. You will find many clothes for less than 8€ (9$).
If you like bargains and vintage items, then we recommend a visit to the Rastro market which is open on Saturdays and Sundays in the Latina district of Madrid.
For the best experience, visit the Rastro market on Sunday morning, there are more traders and it is easier to negotiate.
Rent a bike
Rent a bike to get around the city center of Madrid. Madrid's city center has the advantage of not being very big and can be visited very easily by bike. You will find many shops or rent bikes near the Plaza Mayor.
Once you've rented your bike, you can explore Retiro Park, Calle Gran via, Debod Park or Madrid Rio. Your hotel may offer bikes for hire, so don't hesitate to ask for them to enjoy a ride around Madrid.
There are many things to do and see during a stay in Madrid, make sure to get the most of it when you get a chance to get around Spain's capital city!
