Hi everyone!
If I gotta be honest with you, publishing Minneapolis for the series on the day when George Floyd passed away made me a bit hesitant to cover anything about the United States these days.
I don't want to get political, but neither I want to sound tone-deaf with the situation. All I could hope is that the event starts the revolution in the country. Coming from a third world country myself, I would see America as an ideal place to find the equality that we deserve. But then again, nothing is perfect in this world.
So today, I will still cover a city in the United States for this week's $10 series… And thanks to Chris of Wander Florida, we're going to find out how far you could get with $10 in Dunedin.
Various Things to Do on the Budget in Dunedin
Dunedin, Florida is a waterfront town near Tampa on Florida's Gulf coast. Dunedin is the Spring Training home of the Toronto Blue Jays as well as an artsy town with festivals and fairs happening most weekends except during the scorching summer months. As such, there are lots of things to do in Dunedin for $10.
Festivals
Many of Dunedin's festivals and fairs held downtown won't cost a dime to get in. You'll have to pay for parking, usually $5 to $10 although there are several free parking lots as well.
Free Festivals include Art Harvest, Wine the Blues, Dunedin Orange Festival, Stone Crab Festival, HOB Craft Beer Festival. While entry is free, souvenirs, food, and drinks are not.
Murals and Tacos
Take a walk to see more than 30 Dunedin murals around the downtown and waterfront areas. One of those locations is Taco Baby, formerly a stand-alone ATM machine which was retrofitted as a taco stand. Grab an authentic street taco and relax at one of their picnic tables. Tacos cost $3 each.
Step Back in Time
Stroll along Victoria Avenue, Dunedin's oldest waterfront street. Historic homes under giant oak trees gaze out over St. Joseph Sound. Victoria Avenue is still unpaved and is lightly traveled by cars so it's a gentle walk for people of all fitness levels.
Back in downtown Dunedin, stop by the Dunedin History Museum to learn about all the town's many achievements and unique history.
Entry is $5 for adults; $3 for seniors, military, and teachers; and free for children under $12. After the museum, stroll south to the historic Fenway Hotel where you can walk through the hotel's main halls and see old photos and exhibits of the Fenway and Dunedin.
Enjoy the Beach
Two miles north of downtown Dunedin is the Dunedin Causeway where you can pull your car over and enjoy the warm shallow waters of St. Joseph Sound.
Bring your beach chair to sunbathe as there isn't much sand along the Causeway. If you must have sand, keep going to the end of the Causeway where you'll find Honeymoon Island State Park.
Entry is $8 per vehicle. On Honeymoon Island, take advantage of activities such as sunbathing, shelling, swimming, hiking, and exploring the nature center.
Art Galleries
Several art galleries call Dunedin home. Start with the Dunedin Fine Art Center. Entry is free, and you can view the exhibits and enjoy the kid's exploration area. There is also a café and gift shop.
Head back to downtown Dunedin where you'll find numerous art studios including Sterling Art Studios and Gallery, Painted Fish Gallery, Creative Arts Institute, Clay and Paper Gallery of Art, and Lead Lines Stained Glass Studio.
All are free to browse, and select pieces of artwork are available for sale.
