There’s much to love about setting off on a long adventure, but it’s just a fact that it does – or can, rather – negatively affect other areas of your life. Your career may have to take a backseat. Your personal relationships may not blossom as much as you’d like. And your health and fitness may not be as robust as it once was.
But it doesn’t have to be this way. If traveling shows you anything, it’s that everything is possible. You may not naturally stay as fit as a fiddle when you’re moving from A to B and onto C, but by incorporating a few tried and tested tips into your routine, you can ensure that you return home in just as good shape as when you left.

When you’re traveling, you’ll sometimes find that you have a fully equipped kitchen, at other times you’ll have a hot-plate and a microwave. At others, you’ll have no kitchen whatsoever.

A little bit of sun is essential for a healthy body and mind, but if you’re getting more than your fair share? Then you might find that you’re in trouble.
If you’re not used to sunny weather, and you’re traveling to a spot that gets plenty, then you might be tempted to spend as much time outside, in order to work on that tan.
However, remember that the sun can cause a lot of damage if you’re not careful. You’ll get burned first, and it may also cause dehydration and longer-term skin damage. Always wear sunscreen, and avoid time in the sun during the hottest periods of the day.
Pack Your Running Shoes
You might be trying to trim down your luggage, but there’s something you’ll want to make sure you’ve got in there: your running shoes.
If you leave them at home, you’ll have the perfect excuse to avoid engaging in a spot of exercise. If you have them with you, then you’ll have a constant reminder of: “I should be doing something.”
The advantages of going for a run stretch beyond simply keeping you fit and healthy too. They’re also good for waking up the cells after a long journey, and exploring a new city or natural area.
If the running shoes will take care of the aerobic side of your fitness, then what about the strength part?
You would be seriously foolish to carry weights with you, and it’s just not affordable possible to join a gym in every new destination. Fortunately, you have a couple of travel-friendly strength-building options that you can make the most of: calisthenics, which is an equipment-free workout style, and resistance bands.

For a different experience, look at joining a Meetup class. These are often hosted in the outdoors, so you get to know the area, and you’ll also meet locals too. It’s a win-win-win.
Lay Off the Partying
There’s much fun to be had when you’re traveling, and there’s always time and space for a relaxing drink with friends old and new. However, it’s always important to keep in mind that there is such a thing as too many partying.
If you’re going out too often, you won’t just burn through your budget faster than you’d hope, you’ll also be doing damage to your health.
It’s impossible to stay in peak physical condition if you’re not giving enough sleep and you’re consuming too many alcoholic drinks. Make sure you find the happy balance between going out and having fun, and relaxing.
Find Your Relaxing Space
Traveling is fun, sure, but it can also be chaotic. After a while, it’s possible to get too caught up in the rush, and lose your sense of self.
Once this happens, your mental health can take a downward turn. We talk about health and fitness only in terms of the physical side, but the mental aspect is just as important!
Before you travel, make sure you’re putting the pieces in place that’ll allow you to weather the madness of moving from one place to the next. Meditation is an exceptionally good tool in this regard, and it’s something that you can practice anywhere.
Commit to Walking
You’re going to be visiting a lot of sights and attractions when you’re traveling, and this is a great opportunity to give your health and fitness a boost!
It’s all about how you’re getting there. If you’re taking a taxi wherever you go, then the health gains will be non-existent.
If instead, you’re walking, then you’ll quickly rack up a lot of miles. So don’t even think about it – when you want to visit somewhere, pull on those walking shoes.
In the Outdoors
Finally, remember that the outdoors is your fitness friend when you’re traveling! Hiking is a terrific way to enjoy yourself and go off the beaten path, and it’ll also help to keep your body in check, as well.
